Introduction to cave or mine exploration
A variety of venues are used throughout the Peak District and surrounding area to include; natural cave systems or old lead mines
An introductory session will include fitting and adjusting caving equipment – cave suit, helmet, belt, battery and lamp (headtorch), use of a guidebook to find out more about access and history of exploration underground, use of a cave/mine survey (map) to navigate along passage ways underground, useful techniques to move more comfortably/efficiently, find out more about speleotherms (formations include straws, stalchtites, flowstone and stalachmites), formation of underground passageways, with an occasional crawl or squeeze for the more adventurous.
It’s good to wear old, comfortable, warm clothing that you can move around and cave in. Old trainers, walking boots or wellies are suitable foot wear. It’s good to have a complete change of clothing and towel with you. All technical equipment will be provided, for example, cave oversuit, helmet, belt and lamp. |
