Introduction to open canoeing / kayaking on moving or white water
A variety of rivers are used throughout the Peak District and surrounding area
A session to include a revision of flat water skills session will include using either open canoe (share with another person) or kayak (single person), fitting and adjusting canoeing equipment to include; buoyancy aid, helmet, basic paddling skills, tasks to reinforce skills, what to do in the event of a capsize. An introduction to moving water or white water skills include; breaking in and out, ferry glide, route choice skills negotiating rapids. A journey descending a river between 3 and 4 miles will be undertaken.
It’s good to wear comfortable, warm clothing that you can move around and canoe in. Old trainers or wet suit boots are suitable foot wear. It’s good to have a complete change of clothing and towel with you. If you have some of your own equipment then bring it along. All technical equipment will be provided, for example, helmet, buoyancy aid, cagoule, paddle and kayak or open canoe etc.
