Introduction to vertical Caving, Pot holing or Mine exploration using ladder and lifeline
A variety of venues are used throughout the Peak District and surrounding area to include; natural cave systems or old lead mines
A session to include a revision of basic caving skills for example, fitting and adjusting caving equipment – cave suit, helmet, belt, battery and lamp (headtorch), use of a guidebook to find out more about access and history of exploration underground, use of a cave/mine survey (map) to navigate along passage ways underground, useful techniques to move more comfortably/efficiently, find out more about speleotherms (formations include straws, stalchtites, flowstone and stalachmites), formation of underground passageways, with an occasional crawl or squeeze for the more adventurous.
Vertical caving techniques will allow opportunity to explore other inaccessible parts of a cave or mine using ladder and lifeline. It could include an impressive journey underground following active stream passageways.
It’s good to wear old, comfortable, warm clothing that you can move around and cave in, wellies are suitable foot wear. It’s good to have a complete change of clothing and towel with you. All technical equipment will be provided, for example, cave oversuit, helmet, belt and lamp, harness, ladder and lifeline. |
